Seal Beach Lifeguards Prepare for Crowds On July 4 Weekend

About 24 lifesavers will be on duty through Sunday. During other summer times, they have about 16.

As people head to the coast to cool off during the Independence Day weekend, Seal Beach lifeguards will have more of a presence on city beaches.

“Starting last weekend it’s been crowded,”  said Joe Bailey, city marine safety chief. “We’re expecting a big crowd all of 4th of July weekend.”

“We have extra life guards on duty,” Bailey said.

According to Bailey, normally about this time of year the city would have about 16 life guards watching the sea. However, because of the holiday weekend, they plan to have 24 working.

From June 27 to June 2, lifeguards rescued about 75 people, Bailey said. This week Bailey estimates they'll rescue about 60 to 80 people.

Bailey said, normally, the higher surf – which the area saw last week -- causes more people to have trouble swimming and thus requires more rescues. This July 4 weekend, he’s not expecting high surf, he said, but the increased number of people will probably mean the same amount of rescues.

“It’ll probably even out,” Bailey said.

Bailey said he wanted to remind people to always swim near a lifeguard.
