Seal Beach Body Surfer Recovering from Spinal Injury

A 66-year-old body surfer from Seal Beach is recovering from near-fatal injuries suffered at Newport Beach's Wedge.

A Seal Beach man is recovering from a near fatal body surfing mishap at Newport Beach’s Wedge this month.

The Daily Pilot reported on the story of 66-year-old Seal Beach native Gene Peterson, who suffered broken bones, a spinal chord injury, and a collapsed lung after a wave pounded him into the sandbar during heavy surf on March 30.

According to the newspaper, Peterson is a regular at the Wedge, who is alive today thanks to the aid of fellow surfers who pulled him from the waves.
