RIP, Two Buck Chuck

Goodbye, Two Buck Chuck. Hello, $2.49 Charles Shaw.

`Two Buck Chuck'' has bit the dust, it was reported today.

The $1.99 cent bottle of Charles Shaw wine, sold by Trader Joe's, now costs $2.49 or more per bottle, the Los Angeles Business Journal reported this week.

The cheap wine had already gone up in the other states that the Monrovia-based specialty grocer operates, and California was the last state to see the price go up.

More than 600 million bottles of Charles Shaw brand wine, bottled by the Bronco Wine Co., have been sold by Trader Joe's over 11 years, spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki told the Los Angeles Business Journal.

``We've held a $1.99 retail price for 11 years,'' she told the Business Journal. Raising the price will allow the chain to continue selling wine with the same quality, she said.

Wow. That stuff is cheaper than Apple Andy or Mad Dog 20/20, isn't it? I wonder what percentage of their market share is on skid road? I'm being quite serious here.
Ron Melnyk January 21, 2013 at 04:15 AM
I would guess that very little of their market is made up of skid row folks. Myself and my family have been in Trader Joe's many times and some of our purchases did include Charles Shaw wine. I can say that I have never saw any unsavory characters in the store, let alone buying wine. In case your are not aware Trader Joe's is a up scale market. You should take a walk on the wild side and buy some the wine. Hey, what the hell, you only go around once.

Thanks for your wine review, Ron. Actually I'm not a big wine drinker. But if I was I'd probably stay away from the stuff that's $2.50 a bottle or less. I used to drink that stuff back in high school on Friday nights and used to wake up with a massive headache Saturday morning. Not saying that "two-buck Chuck" would do that. I don't know. Never drank the stuff before. But that's pretty cheap for a bottle of anything these days. I pay almost that much for bottled water. Btw, do you do movie reviews too? Just curious.

One variety of Chuckie Shaw won a blind tasting at the California State Fair. I believe it was a white wine. Don't judge until you've tried it.

Here is the story about that award winner. http://napavalleyregister.com/lifestyles/food-and-cooking/wine/the-judgment-of-california-charles-shaw-chardonnay-is-state-s/article_09f74fcf-6cb8-5ac3-9400-9c99ff37bcd6.html

Sorry, I go to Total Wine now.
JustUs January 21, 2013 at 05:37 AM
If I were a wine drinker I wouldn't care what it tasted like. I would care how it made my head feel the next morning. Why not drink a a quart of it tonight and report back to us in the morning, fact checker? You can be our canary in the coal mine, ok? :^)

You are missing the point. The point should be, why a 25% increase in costs? What other items have to go up by 25% before people notice what's happening here in California and this country?
CDC January 21, 2013 at 09:39 AM
"25% increase in costs?" It has been two buck chuck since the 2002. They should have raised the price years ago. You do the numbers. http://money.cnn.com/2007/09/05/news/companies/Two_Buck_Chuck.biz2/ The tax on alcohol has actually gone up more over the same period. So much in fact, that the tax increase was found invalid in state court. The State Board of Equalization has to now refund the tax amount. http://www.boe.ca.gov/sptaxprog/pdf/l317.pdf

For me, it tastes fine, but the headache from 2 glasses has kept me away from it.
Farook Asad January 21, 2013 at 04:00 PM
happy to hear that they will be able to provide the same quality. I see no reason why anyone would want to pay over $2.49 for an exceptional bottle of wine.
O-Mandy January 21, 2013 at 04:02 PM
I'm with you Chris, the wine taste fine, it's the headache I get from it that keeps me from 2 buck Chuck. :) Sad to read about the price increase, but glad they were able to hold off for as long as they did, thanks Trader Joe's.
John B. Greet January 21, 2013 at 04:10 PM
So now it's essentially three-buck chuck. And? It still serves its purpose for those who can stomach it.
JustUs January 21, 2013 at 04:30 PM
Hey, it's still a semi-free Country. If you want to drink 'two and a half buck Chuck' - bottoms up! Decades ago when I was in high school - $2.49 for a bottle that size would have been a bargain. Thinking back, I paid about $3 for a liter (that was the cheapest stuff I could find back then) and I still had a pounding migrane the whole day on Saturday. I finally went back to drinking beer and even stopped drinking that eventually. But God bless Trader Joe's for peddling "two and a half buck Chuck". I've always been a big advocate of consumer choice and perhaps Charles Shaw is helping to keep the price of wine under control. I wonder if the Catholic church uses Charles Shaw wine at their masses? Might be a nice way for the pope to save a few bucks. heh. :^)

Why should we care about the pricing strategy for cheap, rancid tasting wines? FWIW This crud in a bottle is still cheaper than Thunderbird and Robitussin. But hey, who cares? Drinky drinky!!!

mfriedrich, I believe it was you who was debating the violent crime stats of Santa Ana a while back. Did you happen to see that 2 more were murdered there over the weekend? One by a knife, one by a gun. Go read the story. It's on-line at the Register.
MFriedrich January 22, 2013 at 12:36 AM
No justus. I don't recall saying that crime doesn't exist in Santa Ana and Anaheim. I merely pointed out a study by the FBI noting sharp decreases in crime, including violent crime on Santa Ana. I believe crime rose but slightly in Anaheim.
Tony Busko January 22, 2013 at 08:29 AM
I like that, three buck chuck!
JustUs January 22, 2013 at 04:10 PM
Everytime there is another shooting, stabbing or murder in Santa Ana I will be sure to point it out to you, mfriedrich. I expect lots of communication. I guess you don't read the news like the rest of us do. I just want you to be accurately informed as a good citizen. :^)
MFriedrich January 23, 2013 at 05:59 AM
I dont know what you hope to prove by it, other than that you are incapable of making an intelligible argument about anything, and that you repeatedly try to debate points or claims here that other commenters never made in the first place.
JustUs January 23, 2013 at 06:14 AM
Here's another one for ya, mfriedrich. http://www.ocregister.com/news/person-388124-police-street.html The Register should start another newspaper just on crime in Santa Ana. And you claim crime is on the downturn there? heh. Pull my left thumb too! :^) Enjoy!

We have been buying 2 buck Chuck for years. Most times the wines are just fine - actually some of the wines were outstanding. We always buy a bottle or two when were are in TJ's. Some of the wine we drink, some of it we use in cooking. We cook some complex dishes and most require a cup of wine. For the money you can't go wrong.

Oh shoot. Didn't mean anything by it except though it was too funny to pass up and didn't know where to put it.

... thought.... . Maybe I should stick to the commitment I just made and broke about silence is golden.
CDC January 23, 2013 at 11:06 PM
For cooking it is great. Compare it to the price of olive oil and wine vinegar at Traders, and it is a buy for cooking table wine.
