Portions of 405 Freeway and 22 Connector to Close Down Tonight

The 405 in Seal Beach and Long Beach will close entirely tonight as will the 22/405 connector.

Major freeway closures tonight and Saturday are expected to cause nighttime gridlock in the Seal Beach, Long Beach and Los Alamitos areas.

The Southbound San Diego Freeway (405) will be fully closed between Seal Beach Boulevard and the San Gabriel Freeway (605) tonight from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Saturday for the demolition of the 405/22/ 7th Street connector.

The eastbound Garden Grove Freeway (22) connector to the southbound 405 will also be closed tonight from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Saturday. At 5 a.m. Saturday, one lane will open up for traffic, and at 10 a.m., the entire connector will be reopened.

On Saturday night the northbound 405 will be fully closed between Seal Beach Boulevard and the 605 from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday morning.

The closures will cause major nighttime traffic delays along one of the nation's most heavily traveled freeways bordering Orange and Los Angeles counties and in the surrounding Seal Beach, Long Beach and Garden Grove neighborhoods. However, it is a necessary safety precaution as the 7th Street connector is torn down, said Orange County Transportation Authority officials. The work is part of the $277 million, three-year West County Connector Project.

For tonight’s southbound 405 closure, OCTA recommends exiting the 405 at Studebaker Road, turn right and head south on Studebaker Road to 2nd Street/Westminster Avenue, turn left on Westminster and head east to the Westminster Avenue 405 onramp.

For this weekend’s northbound 405 closure, exit the 405 at Westminster Avenue and continue west, turn right on Studebaker Road and head north to the 405 onramp.
