Frugal Family: Fall For Baseball

The fall baseball season at St. Hedwigs is one the best deals around.

The main season for kids to play baseball is in the spring, but I love fall baseball for several reasons.

First, it’s such a great deal. St. Hedwig’s registration is only $70 per kid ($80 if you wait until after September 1st to register).  Each kid gets a hat and a t-shirt. My child plays the same in a $5 t-shirt as he does in a $30 jersey, so I am good with just a t-shirt.

Games in the St. Hedwig league are held on Sunday afternoons, and there are no practices during the week.  There is also no snack shack, so you don’t have to work a shift or pay to get out of it (Last year you still could get a tasty dog at each game from a cart).  The season lasts 8 weeks ending in mid-October, when World Series fever is at its height. Best of all, the attitude on the field and in the stands is positive and laid back. That’s exactly what youth sports should be about.

If you decide to give fall ball a try, stop by and pick up a glove and a bat. Used baseball gloves are even better because they are already broken in, and they cost a lot less too. I recently bought a $70 glove for $25. Play It Again Sports carries lots of used bats as well. Some bats retail up to $300, but you can get them for 70% less if you buy them used.  They are located at 11137 Los Alamitos Blvd.
