City Council to Vote on Seal Beach Budget Monday

City staff proposes to dip into reserves to tune of $3.83 million to pay for capital improvement projects.

Seal Beach will decide where the money goes Monday.

The City Council is scheduled to vote on a 2013-2014 budget that staff says is balanced and will keep city services at expected levels. 

City staff estimate the money coming into the city’s general fund will be about $28.8 million, a number bolstered by an estimated $350,000 increase in expected city sales tax revenue.

Though the revenue top operating expenses by about $523,000, the city plans to dip into reserves to the tune of $3.83 million to pay for a number of capital improvement projects

By the end of June 2014, the city will have about $16.6 million in reserve.

In addition to routine maintenance funding, the budget includes $400,000 for backup emergency power, $60,000 for the Local Coastal Plan, $50,000 for the pier storage area repair, $10,000 for underground storage tank remediation and $20,000 for the street tree planting program

The budget also includes 56,600 for local organizations including Run Seal Beach, the Friends of the Los Alamitos-Rossmoor Library and the Seal Beach Lions,

“We’re in very good financial condition,” said Vikki Beatley, city finance director. “We’re seeing an improvement economically in some of the major categories of revenue. Not “great,” great, but its good consistent improvement. … Essentially the city has all of the funding sources available that it needs to operate and provide the quality of life that the citizens of Seal Beach are used to.”
