Review: La Creperie Cafe, Guaranteed to Impress

Review of the awe inspiring La Creperie Cafe in Long Beach.

Hello everyone, both the college foodies are here to share with you our opinions on one of our favorite restaurants in the Long Beach area, La Creperie Cafe. As the name suggests, La Creperie Cafe is a bohemian style French bistro that serves the most amazing sweet and savory crepes as well as delicious paninis, delectable pastas, and fresh salads.

Ciao! Here’s Johnny- I have been going to La Creperie ever since I was 14. My family had heard about it and decided to go for lunch one time. Ever since, we have become regular patrons of this wonderful establishment. Of the food, I have never had one bad thing. I’ve never even had one just good thing. Every single dish I have sampled is extraordinary. . We all have relatives that come in from out of town. And when they say, “Take me somewhere you like to eat,” you don’t want to take them to a chain restaurant they may have back home. You want to take them somewhere local and unique. For me, La Creperie is at the top of my list.

Nicole here – I am a more recent fan of La Creperie. It was actually Johnny who introduced me to the restaurant, and to be honest, I was a little apprehensive about going. The only other time I have had a crepe was in Las Vegas a long, long time ago at the Paris Hotel. All I remember about that crepe was that it was overly sweet and that I just did not like it. So when Johnny told me that we would be dining on crepes not only for dessert but dinner as well, I was nervous that I wasn’t going to like it. Let me tell you, I don’t like to admit when I’m wrong, but I was completely and totally off about how amazing crepes can be. Trust me: do not be afraid to try crepes because they are little wrapped up packages of flavor and delicious-ness!

One of our favorite things about La Creperie, besides the food of course, is the atmosphere. It really is different from any other restaurant. La Creperie is a wonderful laid-back, yet glamorous setting all in one. When you dine in this bistro underneath exposed brick walls, enormous gold-framed mirrors, and glimmering crystal chandeliers, you feel as though you have been transported to an underground Parisian club. There is even live music starting around 7:00 p.m. every evening, which is always fun. It is perfect for a romantic date or a night out on the town with friends.

On our latest trip to La Creperie, the two college foodies were accompanied by Nicole’s older sister, Lindsay, Johnny’s older sister Justine, and good friend, Jodie. Seeing as there are so many things to try on this fantastic menu, we all decided to get different crepes and try a taste of each one.

Nicole here, Lindsay and I shared the French Riveria. It had chicken breast, artichokes hearts, fresh tomato and mozzarella cheese in a sherry basil cream sauce. The perfect summer dinner, it was light but still substantial. The artichoke hearts were huge, and there were plenty of them in this dish! The sauce, which is always the best part of La Creperie crepes, was absolutely delicious and the hint of basil brought out the flavors of this dish.

Jodie had the Carbonara crepe, which included chicken breast slices, mozzarella and smoked bacon in a creamy garlic parmesan sauce with pesto. First of all, it has bacon in it. Bacon is one of the most delicious things on the planet, and its addition to any dish automatically means it is going to be tasty. This crepe combines all of the ingredients of the time honored Pasta Carbonara dish - a well loved Italian favorite. Johnny gives this one his Italian seal of approval, so you know it has to be good!

Johnny here, I tried the Parisian Crepe, which is Momma Mynott’s favorite at La Creperie. It combines chicken breast, fresh spinach, sweet red peppers and mozzarella in a basil & feta cream sauce. I actually had not had this one yet but was extremely impressed by the combination of these subtle flavors. It was sweet and creamy, yet wonderfully savory all at the same time: definitely a good choice.

The clear winner for the night, though, was Justine’s choice of the Dipollo crepe. It included fresh wild mushrooms, herbs de provence and mozzarella, chicken, in a sherry cream sauce. The herbs de provence took this dish to the next level, while the wonderfully layered flavors of the sauce enhanced the natural flavor of the wild mushrooms. Everyone loved this dish, and we definitely will be reordering it again!

Now, it wouldn’t be a trip to La Creperie without dessert. If you think you are going to come here and not order dessert, you are mistaken. It doesn’t matter how full you are, you must… MUST order dessert. All of them are absolutely fabulous in their own right, and La Creperie has tons of different combinations to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Nicole and Lindsay shared Hot Feelin’, a cinnamon, sugar, and butter crepe. This is the perfect crepe to order if you are a bit hesitant about trying crepes or just want something lighter after your meal. Because it is served warm, the sugar caramelizes with the cinnamon, creating a delicious filling for this crepe. Also, because the flavors are simple inside the crepe, you can really taste what the actual crepe tastes like, which of course, is divine.

Jodie ordered one of the specialty dessert crepes, the Tiramisu. It had all the flavors of tiramisu wrapped inside a crepe and topped with a scoop of ice cream and créme anglaise. This is actually a cold crepe, but worry not, it is divine. For anyone craving a little coffee and a whole lot of sweetness after dinner, this is definitely the way to go. It is all the decadence of tiramisu, folded into the wonder that is a crepe!

Johnny and Justine shared the Romeo and Juliet, which is nutella with strawberries and bananas. Of course, nutella is one of Johnny’s favorite things on Earth. And it goes marvelously with these two fruits. When it is all wrapped up in a crepe and warmed, something truly magical happens. Just like Romeo and Juliet, this combination is a match made in heaven.

La Creperie has never ceased to fail us in its plethora of delicious, flavorful dishes. We always make it a goal to try something new each time we go, and we have yet to be disappointed. Don’t be afraid to be adventurous, because the pay off is a one-of-a-kind food experience. This bistro cafe has everything to offer in the way of food and atmosphere. You want unbeatable food in a beautiful setting with a hip, cool crowd? Then La Creperie is the place for you!

Foodie Notes: We recommend going on a weeknight, because 2nd street can be horribly crowded on the weekends. Also, they have a fabulous breakfast menu, which we will definitely feature at a later date. Oh and Nicole recommends the garlic fries, they totally rock!
