Super Bowl Sunday

Super Bowl Sunday at the beach--a perfect day for non-sports fans. We're so lucky to live in a beautiful, warm place.

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY  - AN L.A. DAY AT THE BEACH

I wrote this last Super Sunday.  I felt the same yesterday.

Yesterday,  I felt like a Jew on Christmas.  Like a vegan at a Chili cookoff.  Like a college graduate at a Nascar race.  I felt out of synch.  Why?  Because I didn't watch football on Super Bowl Sunday.  I didn't go to a party, and I didn't watch it at home.  And I sure didn't go to a sports bar.

It was great!  I had the world to myself, and it was an uncrowded one, for once.

I took advantage of our tremendous Southern California weather, and first I went to the beach.  The parking was a cinch, the tide was out, and the beach walkers were few.  I sauntered along the wet sand, not a care in the world, and smiled at the few people I saw.  There was nobody swimming or even surfing.  No radios, no blankets, and no dogs.  Just a mild breeze, toasty sunshine on my face, and plenty of quiet.  Even the waves were calm.  A delightful day at the shore!

Then I went to get a car wash.   I went to the neighborhood place, where there's usually a throng on weekends, especially after a week with some rain.  There were one or two other cars, besides mine.  Two other ladies and I sat in the waiting area and discussed how great it was to be there, just we girls, minus the crowds.   I was in and out of there in minutes.  And the workers there were so nice and so glad to see me.  Like Super Bowl Magic!

Even the grocery store and the coffee place were were quiet as churches.  No lines!  Personal service from the employees!   The advantages of Southern California without the millions taking up your space.

Sure, the Pittsburghers and Green Bay-ites (I was born one myself) can stay inside all day on a miserable, icy, below-zero Super Bowl day.  They can't go outside, anyway.  But, after 30 years as a Californian, I can say, "Tough tacos, Easterners!" It's February, and I'll be shaking off our one-month winter and slathering on the sun block, as I open my sun roof and enjoy the rare lack of traffic.

Who cares if L A ever gets its own football team again?

Why can't every Sunday be Super Bowl Sunday?
