Boomer on the Loose: Afternoon Runners

Having fun, driving around and seeing the high school kids running through the neighborhood. A really sweet sight, with all the youngsters running together in the mid-afternoon sun's glow.

A sweet sight as I was driving west on Wardlow  today.  I was headed toward El Dorado Park when I saw the cross country runners from Los Alamitos High.   Could it have been 70 or 80 of them?  Team tryouts, I suppose.  Before school starts next week.

Such a pack of them, in their blue and white, running so joyfully.  One kid was going pretty fast, in front of the others for a while.   Then he lagged back to join the other kids.

I'm kinda sentimental lately, and I just thought how fun it seemed, running with a pack of other kids, and trying to get on a team in high school.  Not that I could ever run, even at my best and youngest.  It sure looks like freedom, doesn't it?

As they started up the hill to El Dorado Park, with the sun in their faces, I loved that I could see them in their blue shorts and white t-shirts.  It was earlier than I would've been driving there, back in the bad old days when I had to work.

So I felt lucky to be around, to see another school year getting ready to start.  And the best part---after so many years of dreading "First Day of School", I'm retired, so I don't have to worry about a thing!
