Ruby's Diner to Close Seal Beach Pier Restaurant

The iconic 50s diner on the pier will close Jan. 10.

Ruby’s Diner on the Seal Beach Pier is going the way of poodle skirts and twenty-cent shakes.

The iconic restaurant will close its doors Jan. 10 after the 25 years of slinging burgers for beachgoers. After the restaurant’s owner and city officials failed to agree on new lease terms, the 50s era restaurant notified the city that it would no longer operate on the pier.

“We hate losing piers. We love piers – there aren’t that many of them,” said Tad Belshe, Ruby’s executive vice president of operations. “It’s been a pleasure. We love these beach communities and serving the public.”

The 30-year-old Newport Beach chain, which has restaurants on the Oceanside, Balboa and Huntington Beach piers has no plans for further closures, said Belshe. The company is planning to expand with new locations in Orange County and San Diego malls and a new quick-serve model, Belshe said. The decision to close in Seal Beach stems from failed lease agreement negotiations between the franchise partner and the city, Belshe said.

Ruby’s 10-year lease with the city expired in October, and the owner had hoped to extend the lease and renovate the restaurant, said Belshe. However, the city sought to open up the process to bids from other restaurateurs eager to open on the pier, he said. The Seal Beach Ruby’s owner decided not to operate and renovate in the face of such uncertainty, said Belshe.

“That’s business,” Belshe said. “From a Ruby’s standpoint, we have had a wonderful relationship with the city, and I think they are moving in a different direction where they want to get the best option available.”

"We'll just have to look for another option on the pier," said Mayor Gary Miller.

Assistant City Manager Sean Crumby said he couldn’t speculate about Ruby’s reasons for leaving.

“We are in the process of moving forward with finding a restaurant for the end of the pier,” said Crumby. “We are just looking for the best fit for Seal Beach. Right now, we are looking at family restaurants.”

Restaurateurs looking to open shop at the end of the second largest wooden pier on the west coast can expect to shell out as much as $5,000 to 10,000 per month. Interested businesses should contact Crumby at 562-431-2527 x 1318.

Are you sorry to see Ruby's go? What would you want to see open in its stead?

Bad news. Ruby's was a nice little excuse to walk out on the pier. But those rest rooms! They won't be missed. Just put a cheap hamburger place out there for the surfers and beach goers. Frankly, Ruby's is a bit upscale these days for that shack, Just don't take away Walt's Wharf. Main Street would collapse.

Negotiations are still going on. Ruby's should stay. BTW, Ruby's has maintained the bathrooms at the pier. They wanted to add an outdoor patio, outdoor seating and a shuttle to and from the pier. They have submitted plans and have some great ideas. If Ruby's leaves, the building will need to be demoed. There is to my knowledge, no other pier that has a public restroom at the end of it. If they demo the building, the new business and possibly according to code, may have to have their own restroom. Also, the pier is in bad shape up at the end. The city would have to pay thousands and possibly hundreds of thousands in repairs. I believe Ruby's can make it. Keep the rent low for now, with gradual increases, it's a win win. Ruby's brings people to an other wise dead pier. Is it really in the budget to renovate the end of the pier? This is not Huntington, we will never have enough foot traffic to be as busy nor do we have a city that has proven to be tourist friendly. Again, shame on you City of SB.

Shame on city of SB ! You can't rent a vacation cottage, fish on the pier ! Residents dislike like families with kids... Time to get rid of CITY COUNCIL ... WAKE UP
Rudy January 5, 2013 at 02:57 am
The residents of Seal Beach need to wake up !! You are right City council & City hall is full of numskulls ! You can't come here for a vacation if you have kids or fish on the pier. Shame on the city of Seal Beach.. Time to sell my house and move to a friendly
beach town.. I'll take my TAX dollars somewhere else..
Rudy January 5, 2013 at 03:00 am
I AGREE GET RID OF CITY COUNCIL ! Keep RUBY'S ON THE PIER!
WE NEED CHANGE A NEW CITY COUNCIL !!!

Another publication reported the Ruby's was paying:
The city was to be paid a $6,000 monthly base rent, along with 6 percent of the gross food sales and 7 percent of the gross alcohol sales. WHAT A SCREWING!!!!! What this comes down to is a current era where rents are DOWN, but SB wants to continue the rape. The total rent may have been as much as $10,000 per month assuming $60k of sales. Insofar as the restroom is concerned, it has an outside entrance and should be the responsibility of the CITY as it is a public restroom. SEAL BEACH should have given them a 5 year extension at $4000 per month and no percentage in view of the depressed market rents.

After reading all of the comments, lets hope that the absurdity of the city council has been exposed for about the hundredth time. This council must mirror the majority of the citizenry philosophy who elected them so your combating a totally defective compilation of bizarre thought processes. There is no hope for this collection of misfits so don’t go to Seal Beach, get smart, they don’t want us to visit their grubby , sullied and diminutive grease spot on the map. End of Story

Edgar,
What a sad, little creature you are. Have you no joy in your life sir? If you're so unhappy, perhaps you should put your money where your big mouth is and run for a seat on the city council. Maybe you could convince the voters of Seal Beach that what they really need is a bitter malcontent looking out for their best interests. Otherwise, why don't you pack your bags and go live where ever it is that cretins like you retire to.

Ruby's on the Pier has been our Mother's Day family tradition for years. Ruby's in a mall or Ruby's at a shopping center is not Ruby's on the Pier and going to HB and fighting all the traffic is not a convenient option. C'mon SB...get it together and make it work for Ruby's to stay.

So sad.., what happened to saving our historic places.. And supporting our local business.. Rubys has the best burgers...

Facts: There have been numerous closed session discussions by the City Council on the renewal of the 10-yr lease which expired on 10/31/12. On November 13,2013, the Council took the only public action to date which was to exercise a contract option to extend the lease on a month-to-month basis and to increase the base rent by 150%. He can't. I'm pretty sure he lives in Los Al/Rossmoor. He is constantly complaining about how "Seal Beach" has screwed Los Al/Rosmoor over, but he is very fond of complaining, so maybe it's just a hobby

"Rubys has the best burgers"
You have quite the unrefined palate. The swill they serve at Ruby's is comparable to dog food. You're better off not ever eating again than eating the high fat, high sodium garbage that Ruby's passes off to unsuspecting rubes. I for one would prefer to see a higher-end restaurant open on the pier serving actual food; food that won't give me diarrhea and make my waistline expand and clog my heart. And how about they get a restaurant owner that makes some improvements to that ramshackle building and actually clean those disgusting bathrooms every once in a while.
Shelly G January 5, 2013 at 11:13 pm
Wow Raoul, a high end restaurant, really? Not in this economy. They are all struggling. Most people that eat normal food, like Ruby's. Go eat heath food elsewhere or cook yourself. BTW, the restrooms are public restrooms. Ruby's out of their own pocket, does their best to keep it up. Imagine will all the transients and fisherman how hard it is to keep it up. Yet they do their best on their dime.
Christen Jackson January 5, 2013 at 11:14 pm
That is horrible. We will have dinner there tomorrow and cry into our burgers and shakes.
Richard Cheese January 6, 2013 at 12:18 am
How about an Irish bar at the end of the pier? Seal Beach could use another one.
Christina January 6, 2013 at 05:51 am
Raoul Duke, his palate sure couldn't be as unrefined as your manners are. You really have NO idea what you are talking about and I am embarrassed for you considering you probably do not even realize what an insensitive moron you sound like ...
Richard January 6, 2013 at 08:26 am
One more glass of Chardonnay Chrissy...
Edgar January 6, 2013 at 11:31 am
How erroneous you are.... I take contentment in living my life to its fullest, travel most of the time , have seen all of the United States, lived in Europe , traveled throughout the world, I just have by no means seen or have run across such a narrow bandwidth of societal anti advancement or intolerant collection of people that live in a little microcosm as Seal Beach (providentially not all are grouped in this remark but you categorically match this profile). But it is your oral cavity has an acute diarrhea problem, best look in the mirror when your start painting people with a bitter malcontent brush.
1. They ran off the bus service with Long Beach Provided for those living in Seal Beach without cars. And racial overtones were part of the dialog.. 2. You can't rent a vacation cottage. 3. Fish from the pier 4. Residents dislike like families with kids... 5. Bitched about airplanes flying over their city 6. Do not want unrefined palates in the city 7 No new development in the Long Beach Marina area 8 Base their budget on Parking Tickets

Look. The general manager has been fighting for ownership of the restaurant. He had full intentions of remodeling with plans to extend the deck for outdoor seating and a possible wet bar. He's worked for the company for 25+ years. He's poured his heart and soul into that restaurant and deserves to own it. It was a huge shock to discover that 30-45 employees are now jobless and unemployed. We had to discover our fate through the media. Corporate has yet to call or email the employees. I was told two days ago that yesterday would be my last day. Raoul & Richard, you have no idea how devastated the entire crew is to loose not only our jobs but our Ruby family. Ruby's is a place for families and the baby-boomer generation. Our regular customers feel comforted by visiting us-it takes them back to how it was when they were kids. It's not just about the food...the atmosphere and the wait staff make it a safe place for them. You have no reason to write such hateful words when you know nothing of our backstory.
Dr. Zillman January 7, 2013 at 11:50 am
Can the SB Pier Ruby's employees be integrated into other Ruby's locations?
RubyGal January 7, 2013 at 01:36 pm
We can apply to other locations-I've personally worked at a few different Ruby's. The problem is that some of the closer Ruby's are already overstaffed. The majority of the Seal Beach crew is searching elsewhere.
Robert Bouey January 7, 2013 at 03:46 pm
Good points. Thank you for the reply. I just thought the franchisee was the party wanting to make improvements. Not sure if we'll ever know the full story. I hope there is another tenant lined up. Would hate for the pier to remain vacant for too long.
Brenda Larson January 18, 2013 at 02:08 pm
I am very sad to see Ruby's go - I and my family have been coming - from Las Vegas, no less - to go there for years. You see, I am one of those horrible vacation renters that decends on Seal Beach every summer and Ruby's has always been our favorite place to go. I subscribe to the Sun and have been quite upset over lots that has been happening in the wonderful little town I've been planning to retire in when the time comes in a few years. I certainly hope things bounce back to the way they were a few short years ago - I really have my heart set on retiring there, but now that I cannot even vacation there I might just find a new shangrila.

Hey folks, It's John Crandall, Patch Reporter
There's a possibility that Ruby's might return to the Pier. http://losalamitos.patch.com/articles/will-ruby-s-on-the-seal-beach-pier-be-replaced-by-ruby-s

Oh, look, more complaining from Edgar!
I could address every single one of YOUR erroneous complaints, but you have proven to be a delusional whiner, so I won't waste my time. If you hate Seal Beach SO MUCH, why don't you leave and never come back? I know why; then you wouldn't be able to partake in your favorite activity; complaining about Seal Beach!
