Los Alamitos Blockbuster Begins Closing Procedures Saturday

The last day to rent movies from the Los Alamitos Blockbuster is Saturday.

The Los Alamitos Blockbuster, one of only a handful of locations left in Southern California, will close its doors come January after Blockbuster announced Wednesday it will shutter its remaining 300 stores across the country.

The last day to rent movies from the Los Alamitos Blockbuster location will be Saturday, according to the store's manager.

On Sunday, the store will close and crews will start prepping the store to sell off inventory. The Los Alamitos store will reopen again on Friday to begin a going out of business sale.

According to the manager, the store will remain open until the middle of January, but rentals will not be available past Saturday.

Blockbuster, once the country's movie rental giant, has seen declining business with the advent of rental services such as Netflix, Redbox and streaming video services. The company is currently owned by DISH Network in Colorado.

"This is not an easy decision, yet consumer demand is clearly moving to digital distribution of video entertainment," said Joseph P. Clayton, DISH president and chief executive officer. "Despite our closing of the physical distribution elements of the business, we continue to see value in the Blockbuster brand, and we expect to leverage that brand as we continue to expand our digital offerings."

DISH also said that it will discontinue Blockbuster's DVD by mail service and close its distribution centers.
