Labor Day Travelers See Gas Prices at Record High

Local gas prices jumped 13 cents this week, making the holiday weekend the most expensive ever, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.

A surge in gas prices this weekend has made this Labor Day weekend the most expensive, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.

Gas prices jumped almost 2 cents a day this week, breaking local records.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Orange County is $3.855 per gallon, a 13.6-cent jump from last week and five cents higher than last month. That’s about 82 cents higher than last year.

“Gas prices have gone up around the country over the past week, but not by double digits as we’ve seen in California,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “Refinery issues are being blamed for the spike, and unfortunately that means holiday travelers will be paying prices for their Labor Day fuel that are near or beyond what they paid in 2008, our record-breaking year for gas prices.”

According to the Auto Club, about 2.32 million southlanders are expected to head out of town this weekend, with 80 percent – or 1.89 million—expected to hit the roads.
