Gas Prices Might Be Leveling Off

Locally gas prices plateaued at some stations or climbed slightly at others this week, but it's too early to tell what the slowdown portends.

Some cities have even seen slight declines in the past days, but experts say it's too early to tell whether prices are really going down.

While some Southland gas prices continued to rise this past week, others showed signs of plateauing, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Weekend Gas Watch. In Los Alamitos and Seal Beach, prices at some stations stayed the same over the last week while others climbed by about 5 cents.

In Orange County, the price is $4.202, up 2 cents from last week.

“Most local areas are posting prices above $4.20 a gallon, and a few cities have seen no increases or even a very slight price decline in the last day or two,” Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring said. “However, with the continued volatility of oil and gasoline prices on commodities exchanges, it’s too soon to call this either a price plateau or the start of a price decline.”

According to MapQuest, the lowest price for gas in the U.S. is $3.32 in Casper, Wy., and the highest is here in California—$5.67 in Death Valley.
