Gas Prices Drop for Six Weeks Straight

Experts recommend price shopping to encourage competition among gas stations.

In the holiday spirit of giving, the oil companies are giving drivers a break with the sixth straight week of price declines.

The Orange County average price also fell today for the 38th consecutive day, dropping a half-cent to $3.526, the lowest amount since Feb. 18. The Orange County average price is 4.1 cents less than one week ago and 26 cents lower than a month ago but 27 cents more than one year ago. The Orange County average price has dropped 31.5 cents over the past 38 days.

The decreasing prices are the result of lower demand, which is typical for the fall, according to Jeffrey Spring of the Automobile Club of Southern California.

``Drivers in most local areas should now be able to find gas stations charging less than $3.50 a gallon,'' Spring said. ``It is important to aggressively price shop now to encourage further competition, because prices are still 30 cents higher than this time last year.''
