Boeing to Eliminate 250-300 Local Engineering Jobs, According to Report

The Seattle Times is reporting on a Boeing email announcing the elimination of senior engineering positions in Seal Beach, Huntington Beach and El Segundo.

Hundreds of the region’s Boeing engineering positions will be eliminated this year in Seal Beach, Huntington Beach and El Segundo, according to a report by The Seattle Times.

Updated: On Tuesday, Boeing issued the following statement: “Boeing’s Space & Intelligence Systems unit is forecasting the need to reduce its employment level by 250 to 300 people in 2013.  The affected sites are El Segundo, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach and Torrance.  A customized incentive package has been created that enables eligible employees in S&IS to volunteer for layoff.” 

, but, at the time, a company spokeswoman said the decision would not lead to local layoffs.

“The Boeing Company has anticipated for some time now that the U.S. defense budget trends will be flat to down, and that is why we have been pursuing affordability measures since 2010,” Boeing spokeswoman Brittany Kuhn said while announcing the Seal Beach buildings sale in November. “At this point, it is too early for Boeing to speculate on what cuts that may come in future budget cycles might mean for individual programs or the facilities that support them.”

The Pentagon's second-largest supplier, Boeing announced plans last year to consolidate several business units, close a handful of Southern California facilities and reduce executive level staffing by 30 percent from 2010 highs.

According to Kuhn, employees work at more than 50 locations throughout the state, with the largest concentration in the Los Angeles area. Three sites – El Segundo, Huntington Beach and Long Beach – have more than 4,000 employees each.
