Albertsons to Close Stores

Of the 27 store closures nationwide, Albertsons will close 19 in Southern California, the company announced.

The parent company of announced plans today to close 27 of its under-performing grocery stores across the country, including 19 in Southern California.

``These decisions are never easy because of the impact a store closure has on our team members, our customers and our communities,'' said Wayne Sales, president/CEO of Supervalu Inc. ``Today's announcement reflects our  commitment to move with a greater sense of urgency to reduce costs and improve shareholder value.''

The company's announcement did not include a list of stores being closed. The Los Angeles Times reported that stores in Long Beach, Glendale, Northridge and Van Nuys are among those on the chopping block. One of the affected stores, located in Culver City, closed last month.

A statement from Supervalu indicated that the stores being closed are either under-performing of ``non-strategic.''

Most of the affected stores are expected to be closed by December. Supervalu plans to close 60 of its stores nationally, including 22 Save-A-Lot stores, four ACME stores and a Jewel-Osco location.

Lindsey Hanson September 6, 2012 at 12:08 pm
And now their owned by China. way better????

This is not a business failure. They are adjusting to market pressures and poor management. What part of "underperforming and non-strategic" do you not understand?
This is the beauty of the American capitalist system, and over the long run it's a good thing, because you can actually decide to NOT to continue malinvestment in markets or areas that have poor profit yields. You can also close underperforming businesses, can the management (and the workers, true) but re-align the business to better compete. Just go to one of Albertson's competitors and compare prices. Times are tough economically for most, they're prices are too high vis-a-vis local competitors, ergo They're getting their butt kicked.

Plus we're in a global village economy now and companies like Trader Joes and Fresh and Easy, which I don't think provide their employees the same wages and benefits, are growing.

mfriedrich, I used to shop at Albertson's near Marina in Long Beach. I found the service, with the exception of the fish counter, to be horrible. Employees were disinterested & rude, and I saw produce being mishandled on more than one occasion. I took my business elsewhere, and they won't get me back as a customer.
PC September 6, 2012 at 01:32 pm
@Shipwreck Yeah, I have seen the same thing at that location. They could care less about the customer. I often found mistakes on my bill and they looked at me like I was crazy.
Tonya Fitzpatrick September 6, 2012 at 01:53 pm
@Tiny- that's where your wrong. Trader Joes wages are competitive and the benefits are among the best in the industry. They have simply built a better business plan by treating their employees and their customers like family. Others would do well to emulate that philosophy.
GreenInOC September 6, 2012 at 02:08 pm
@Lindsey Hanson, which banks are now owned by China that weren't January 2009?
GreenInOC September 6, 2012 at 02:19 pm
@ tiny, it's amazing what a little research can unearth...
"An assistant store manager can earn six figures. Full time clerks, who are called "crew members," can start in the $40,000 to $60,000 range. On top of that base pay, Trader Joe's makes an annual contribution of 15.4 percent of the employee's gross income to a tax-deferred retirement account." http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2010/12/29/trader-joes-six-figures-for-assistant-managers/ "Part Time Crew Members are eligible for medical, dental and vision coverage after meeting the eligibility requirements." http://www.traderjoes.com/careers/careers-faq.asp#PartTimeBenefits

Perhaps they could not find an outside investor to come in and leverage up their debt.
Tonya Fitzpatrick September 6, 2012 at 03:07 pm
Oops, GreeninOC beat me to it,. Sorry Tiny; I did mot intend to be redundant.
GreenInOC September 6, 2012 at 03:12 pm
@Tonya, no you beat me to it! I saw your comment and decided to look for supporting info and once I found it I posted it.

Green & Tonya, ITA. IMO, you can really tell the difference between an Albertson's employee & one at Trader Joe's. At TJ's they actually seem happy to help you rather than annoyed & bothered. I'm sure it has something to do with they way they are compensated.
tiny September 6, 2012 at 03:34 pm
GreeninOC, I threw Trader Joes in but was aiming at Fresh and Easy. This is an an English supermarket chain which is expanding rapidly now in the US with the Fresh and Easy name. This,I think, is the new global village model with very low wages and benefits, except for maybe some managers and higher ups.
GreenInOC September 6, 2012 at 04:00 pm
@tiny, since you just "threw" Trader Joe's into a sentence making an allegation, do you care to support your allegation against Fresh & Easy (Tesco) or are you comfortable just tossing things out willy nilly?
tiny September 6, 2012 at 04:12 pm
I'm pretty comfortable.
GreenInOC September 6, 2012 at 04:14 pm
@tiny, thank you for making public your complete lack of integrity.
S.A.P. September 6, 2012 at 04:15 pm
LOL @ tiny (and with Green).
I guess that says it all

This man has a rare quality, courage. Unlike the fool in office and his minions. If you thinkRead More the Constitution is a joke, you see him as bad. If you want to be spied on by your own government, Snowden is bad. Courage is missing in the states. The military have it but not the majority of our mediocre citizens.
