High Tide, Big Waves Bring Chance of Flooding

Forecasters predict a week of big surf and warm weather just in time to open the waiting period for the 2012 Seal Beach Surfing Championships.

National Weather Service forecasters predict a building surf, with northwest swells rolling in hip-high by today. High tide and big waves could produce coastal flooding along low-lying sections of Orange County, especially around Seal Beach where oceanfront residents sometimes find saltwater ponds at their doors.

Some surf breaks, such as The Wedge in Newport Beach, could see breakers of 15 feet or so.

Farther north along the Central Coast, the surf could swell to about 20 feet in spots. By Thursday and Friday, another train of big waves will start coming ashore in Southern California. Some surf may be overhead. The big waves are expected to arrive in time to open the waiting period for the 2012 Seal Beach Surfing Championships.
