Update: Freeway Connector Reopened After Emergency Repair

A hole in the deck forced the emergency closure of the southbound 405 Freeway connector to the northbound 605 Freeway for nearly four hours Friday afternoon.

The connector for the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway to the northbound San Gabriel (605) Freeway has reopened after being closed for nearly four hours during rush hour traffic for emergency repairs to a hole in the bridge’s deck.

The connector was reopened just before 8 p.m. Friday night.

“We don’t know what the cause is,” said James Pinheiro, deputy district director of operations and maintenance for Caltrans. “There is no structural threat to the bridge.”

The bridge remained closed until crews could place a large metal plate over the hole, which is similar to a pothole. At a future date, crews will provide a more permanent fix for the problem, Pinheiro said.
