29 Dogs Jammed into Crates and Abandoned Now Ready for Adoption

County authorities are looking for loving homes for the dozens of dogs that were jammed into two crates and abandoned last month.

Many of the dozens of dogs that made national headlines when they were crammed into two crates and abandoned at an Orange County park last month will be available for adoption Saturday at the county’s annual Pet Fair.

Over the last month, workers and volunteers at Orange County Animal Care treated the dogs for neglect and socialized them to overcome their fear.

Primarily small Lhasa Apso and Chihuahua mixes, many of the animals had matted hair, overgrown nails and abrasions when they were left in crates at San Remo Park in Laguna Hills.

“We’re very excited to include these dogs in our annual Pet Fair adoption event,” said Ryan Drabek, director of OC Animal Care. “They have endured quite a lot in the last month and we look forward to giving our community the opportunity to give these dogs, and many others, a second chance.”

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the case of the abandoned dogs.

In May, passersby found 29 dogs jammed into two crates and abandoned at a Laguna Hills park. Investigators tracked the dogs to a man, who said he was attempting to rescue the creatures from his mother, a Rancho Santa Margarita woman with a severe hoarding condition, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

But the ill-conceived rescue attempt went awry when the son’s car allegedly broke down, said authorities. That’s when he abandoned the dogs crammed on top of each other in two crates without food or water.

An additional three dogs were impounded after the ongoing investigation led authorities to the woman’s Rancho Santa Margarita home. Such large-scale cases of dog hoarding are rare in suburban communities such as Orange County, said police and animal control officials.

Police are continuing to investigate the case and have not yet determined if the man will face criminal charges, said Bridget Kelly, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Saturday’s Pet Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Orange County Animal Shelter at 516 The City Drive in Orange. The event will include discounted adoptions on the abandoned dogs and hundreds of other adoptable dogs, cats, bunnies, and critters.

A thank you to those who nurtured those precious pups back to health and helped them believe that humans can be trusting and good. My pomerainian is my baby...it made me sick to read this story. I am thankful the good samaritian came along when he did. There are Angels out there!

Most of the dogs from this case were put up for adoption before yesterday's Pet Fair. A good number of those were adopted by the end of the day yesterday, thanks to the traffic at Pet Fair and the discounts. From noon on, all adoptions were free.
I pulled one of these dogs for a local rescue group and saw several others being adopted at the same time. They are all adorable. The ones going to rescue groups will still need a home, but at least they are getting out of the shelter and will be in foster homes. These dogs were pretty shy, but the OC shelter staff and volunteers have spent a lot of time socializing them this past month. They are all very sweet dogs!

Great story and my best wishes to the dogs and families that adopted them.
You can judge a man's heart by the way he treats animals....

FYI, OC Animal Care posted the final number of adoptions on their Facebook page: 29 cats, 68 dogs and 6 small animals (birds, rabbits, etc..) found their forever homes.

Sad story with a happy ending!
What is wrong with some people? Animals are more reliable than some humans. Makes you wonder.........

Animals are more reliable and loving then 90% of people.
Ever had a dog or cat take advantage of you?

There actually will be a dog-walk at Huntington Beach on Sunday, September 30th, and all proceeds will go towards the OC Animal Care shelter. Looks like fun, since you can take your dogs out for a stroll and to meet other dogs and dog-lovers in the OC and LA area, all for a great cause. This man has a rare quality, courage. Unlike the fool in office and his minions. If you thinkRead More the Constitution is a joke, you see him as bad. If you want to be spied on by your own government, Snowden is bad. Courage is missing in the states. The military have it but not the majority of our mediocre citizens.
