Storm Runoff Causes Unhealthy Water Conditions in Seal and Surfside

Six locations in Seal Beach and Surfside tested positive for unhealthy bacteria levels following recent rains. Authorities are urging caution for swimmers between rain storms.

The Orange County Health Care Agency has issued a rain advisory in effect across local beaches where recent storm runoff has caused unhealthy bacteria levels that may cause illness.

In Seal Beach, sample results from two days ago found four locations where bacteria levels exceeded state health standards. First, Eighth and 14th streets along with a stretch of beach 250 feet south of the pier each tested positive for elevated bacteria levels. In Surfiside water at Sea Way and Anaheim Bay/Huntington Harbor also showed elevated bacteria levels.

Authorities advise swimmers and surfers to stay away from storm drains,
creeks and rivers where the possibility that bacteria or chemical from
debris from storm runoff may contaminate the water.
Further rain could cause the advisory to be extended past Saturday.
