Seal Beach Surf Contest Back On

After a poor surf forecast postponed the competition in January, officials announce the Katin Surf Shop Seal Beach Surfing Championships will return Saturday and Sunday.

Surf’s up … again!

More than a month after a changing forecast postponed the event, the Katin Surf Shop Seal Beach Surfing Championships will return this Saturday and Sunday, officials said.

"We are expecting good surf this weekend, in the three to four foot range on Saturday and two to three on Sunday," said Joe Bailey, Seal Beach Marine Safety Chief, in his weekly email status update. "The temperature is forecast to be in the 80s on Saturday and 70s on Sunday.”

According to Bailey, officials expect about 120 people between the ages of eight to 80 enter the contest. The Seal Beach Life Guard Association has hosted the event for more than 20 years.

In January, after an encouraging surf report, officials announced the contest would begin Jan 19, only to postpone it after the forecasted swell fell apart.

There’s a $40 entry fee, which pays for a t-shirt and a plate at the dinner banquet.
