Saturday Beach Cleanup to Help Endangered Species Inside the Navy Base

Volunteers are needed to help with Saturday's beach cleanup along a remote stretch of beach inside the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station.

Volunteers will have a unique opportunity to help endangered species locally at Saturday’s cleanup inside the naval weapons station along a remote section of beach used for feeding and nesting.

More than 200 people are expected to help out at the event organized by the Navy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service, Friends of the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge and Save Our Beach.

According to Gregg Smith, the base’s public affairs officer, the beach area to be cleaned is used by endangered and threatened bird species including the California brown pelican, western snowy plover, and the California least tern.  The area has been heavily impacted by trash carried in by winter storms, added Smith.
