Populations Virtually Unchanged in Los Alamitos, Seal Beach, Rossmoor

2010 Census figures released today.

The size of the populations of Seal Beach, Los Alamitos and Rossmoor remained virtually unchanged in the last 10 years, according to the 2010 Census results released Tuesday afternoon.

It’s a level of stability that reflects the fact that the three communities have been built for decades. The changes over the last decade aren’t about how many people are living in the communities, but rather who is living in the three communities. As the Census Bureau releases additional reports, there may be slight shifts in the racial, gender and age make-up of the communities.

The population of Los Alamitos is 11,449, according to the 2010 Census results released Tuesday afternoon. That number is nearly identical to the 11,536 people tallied in the 2000 Census.

“I am just amazed that in 10 years, it hasn’t changed hardly at all,” said Henry Taboada, general manger of the Rossmoor Community Services district. “The population decrease is insignificant. It probably just reflects the number of vacancies or foreclosures in Rossmoor.”

Even built-out cities can have dramatic shifts in population, Taboada said. For example, a built-out city such as Long Beach saw big population growth in previous decades as more and more single-family homes gave way to densely populated apartment buildings, he said. “I think this reflects the stability of Rossmoor,” added Taboada.

The Orange County population grew by almost 6 percent over the last 10 years. The 2010 population was 3,010,232, an increase of 5.8 percent since 2000, according to the Census.

Below are charts showing the population breakdowns in the three cities.
