Volunteers Drive 101 Tipsy Celebrants Home on St. Paddy's Day

Seal Beach Lions Club volunteers gave free rides to those who drank a little too much on Main Street.

Volunteers gave more than 100 St. Patrick's Day revelers free rides home Sunday as part of a local tradition aimed at curbing drunk driving incidents.

For the 12th consecutive year, the Seal Beach Lions Club offered no-charge van trips to tipsy pub-hoppers from 4 p.m. to midnight Sunday from Seal Beach's Main Street.

According to organizers, 101 people got free rides home and 48 volunteers helped out.

Event chair Tom Duszynski, said that the evening went well.

“We got slammed (with people) a few times but, you know, we handled it, we got ‘em in the vans and got them home,” said Duszynski, a Seal Beach resident.

Duszynski said the street was crowded about 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., but by 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., it was “thinning out pretty quickly.”

He thanked all the volunteers who “put their time in to make this a really successful program and make it effective to get these people off the streets.” He also thanked the Lions, Straub Distributing Co., the Seal Beach Police Department and the local bars for their help.

Duszynski said he didn’t know if he’d chair again next year, but he said he’d definitely volunteer.

“It’s just something I really believe in,” Duszynski said.
