Hello, Spring; Goodbye, Berm

Today is the first day of spring, the vernal equinox, and the day that the Seal Beach berm gets dismantled.

Today marks the first day of spring. For some, that means cherry blossoms and daffodils. In Leisure World, where the rabbits roam wild, it means fuzzy baby bunnies.

In Los Alamitos and Rossmor, it means coyote season is upon us and spring break is just around the corner – April 9 in the Los Alamitos Unified School District.

In Seal Beach, it means it’s time for the sand berm to go. Today the bulldozers are scheduled to come and begin the annual process of taking down the berm, which probably means there is just a day or so left to sneak in a little late-season berm sledding or surfing.

The first day of spring is actually the vernal equinox when the earth’s axis is neither tilted toward the sun (summer) nor away from it (winter). The exact moment of this year’s spring equinox is at 5:14 a.m. today.
