Five Things To Know Today

School's Out, Graduates Celebrate and Rossmoor Considers Power Grab.

  1. Alice Cooper said it best: School’s Out For Summer. When the bell rings this afternoon, all schools in the Los Alamitos Unified School district - except for Laurel High School and the year-round Weaver Elementary - will begin summer vacation. That calls for a song…and a Muppet dance number.
  2. Congratulations Graduates! Nearly 800 seniors will graduate from Los Alamitos High School today. Among this year’s spirited class of graduating Griffins there is a student who never missed a day of school in 13 years, there are national choir champions, football and lacrosse champions, students with academic and athletic scholarships, Eagle Scouts, exceptional volunteers and many, many hard-working kids who have given their families much to be proud of. The Graduation Ceremony is at 5 p.m. at Cerritos College, 11110 Alondra Boulevard, Norwalk.
  3. Since the graduation ceremony is tonight, it makes sense that Grad Night is too. The celebration will be held at the Los Alamitos High School gym. The party starts at 8:30 p.m. and doors close at 9:30 p.m. It ends at 5 a.m. Entrance is $150 cash.
  4. At tonight’s Rossmoor Community Services Meeting, the Board of Directors are scheduled to vote on whether to petition the county for control over animal control, police or trash collection. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Rush Park Auditorium, 3021 Blume Drive, Rossmoor.
  5. As part of the West County Connector Project, Crews will demolish, excavate and reconstruct portions of the Montecito Channel, adjacent to Martha Ann Drive / Copa De Oro Drive and the 405 / 605 freeways, this week. OCTA officials are warning that this daytime work will be loud and disruptive to neighboring residents.
