Explainer: What’s With the Daytime Closures?

As another week of daytime freeway closures begin, Patch has the scoop on the reason for the unusual daytime disruption.

Monday marks the second week of daytime freeway closures. Once again, the 7th street eastbound 22 connector and northbound 605 connector will be closed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. this week.

While most of the freeway closures created by the West County Connectors project take place at night, any work that involves pile driving has to be done during the day because the noise impact to Rossmoor and the leisure World and College Park West Neighborhoods is too loud.

“It’s in our contract to only do pile-driving during the day,” said Sarah Swensson, Orange County Transportation Authority spokeswoman. “For safety reasons, we have to close the freeway because the crane is too close to the connector.”
