Crews Begin Sand Berm Construction in Seal Beach

The Seal Beach sand berm is built to protect beachfront homes from potential high surf and flooding during the winter months.

With winter fast approaching, crews this week began constructing Seal Beach's sand berm.

On Monday, bulldozers and earth movers staged at the 10th Street parking lot near the Seal Beach pier and began moving mountains of sand.

The annual ritual, which is designed to protect beachfront homes from winter high tides and flooding, is expected to last two or three weeks, according to a news release from the city. The city also said that portions of the beach may be closed as crews and heavy equipment complete the work.

This year, the city said it will utilize a process known as "back-passing," which moves sand from the west side of the Seal Beach Pier to the east side. The process is occasionally used to move sand that has shifted due to "wave run up."

The winter sand berm is also a favorite location for kids to take saucers, sleds and boogie boards and enjoy sand sledding.
