Commuters Urged To ‘Dump the Pump’ This Week

OCTA to host event to thank customers for dumping the pump

This week, the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) is encouraging people to leave their cars at home to try out other forms of transportation for the ‘Dump the Pump’ event.

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) sponsors this national program, which started in June 2006 when gas prices were $3 a gallon. This day emphasizes that public transportation is a great travel option that also helps people save money.

Riders can log on to www.octa.net/dumpthepump until June 17 and pledge to Dump the Pump by choosing not to drive solo and instead take the bus or train, carpool, ride a bike, walk or telecommute. Those who pledge will have a chance to win prizes such as American Express and Starbucks gift cards, and they are also eligible to receive a one-day bus pass by participating in a trivia game.

According to the latest APTA Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two-person household in Southern California can save on average nearly $11,000 annually by downsizing to one car.

OCTA’s week-long promotion will wrap up with a rider appreciation event from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., Thursday, June 16 at the Anaheim train station, 2150 E. Katella Ave. OCTA officials will be on hand to thank current customers and welcome new riders.
