Offbeat O.C. Tomb Awaits Roger Williams

The pianist's customized crypt features a skylight, illuminated stained-glass portrait and jumbo piano keys.

One of Orange County's most unusual tombs awaits pianist Roger Williams, who at age 87.

Located at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, the walk-in marble crypt features a back-lit stained-glass window shaped like the lid of a grand piano. It depicts Williams and a woman at a piano. To their right stands a tree sprouting autumn leaves, the title of his best-known song.

The custom crypt also has a skylight—and the walls are lined with vertical black strips meant to resemble giant piano keys.

In the early 1990s, when Williams decided he wanted to spend eternity in the Crystal Cathedral's outdoor cemetery, these VIP vaults were priced in the neighborhood of $150,000.

Williams, an Encino resident who frequently played at the Crystal Cathedral, outfitted his spacious grave with wall cases designed to hold seven urns.

No fans or flowers were present at the crypt Saturday afternoon, but in Hollywood, Walk of Fame officials announced plans to place a bouquet on Williams' star at 5 p.m.
