Are Parents Who Skip Vaccines Putting Others At Risk?
Despite new law requiring students to be vaccinated against whooping cough, some parents will choose not to vaccinate their children.
A new law for the 2011-12 school year requires all students entering 7th through 12th grade to provide proof of a Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine or Tdap booster shot within the first month of the school year. Inevitably, the debate over vaccines will continue. Do vaccines cause Autism? (Editor’s note: both the Center for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the Institute of Medicine have taken the position that vaccines do not cause autism). Does the government have the right to require that my child be vaccinated? ... etc.
Let me just start by saying that I hate taking my kids in for shots. It’s hard to watch your kid in pain (I take them to Target to reward them for being brave). I don’t like it, but I still do it. I don’t do it because I am required. I do it because I believe it’s best for my children and society at large. Vaccines do a very good job of preventing all sorts of serious diseases.
There is a lot of fear that vaccines cause Autism. According to Easter Seals Disability Services, there are about 3,000 new cases of Autism reported in California each year and medical professionals are mystified as to the cause. On the other hand, the diseases vaccines prevent are very scary too. According to the California Department of Public Health, more than 9,000 new cases of Pertussis were reported in 2010 in California alone. In all, ten deaths were attributed to Pertussis, and all were babies too young to be immunized. It’s reasonable to assume that Pertussis was passed to these babies by someone who lacked immunity to whooping cough.... perhaps they didn’t get the vaccine because of the fear that vaccines cause Autism.
If you chose not immunize your child, you are not only putting your child at risk, but you are putting every baby, elderly person and person with a compromised immune system at risk. There are more than 4,000 new cases of leukemia diagnosed per year and still many other cases of cancer, blood disorders and other immune compromising diseases. There is a child at my kids’ school fighting a serious blood disease. He was healthy enough to come back to school while he continues to battle the disease. He and his parents worry about every child in the classroom with a cold. With his compromised immune system, a simple cold could send him to the hospital.
The fears of Autism are very real. 3,000 new cases a year is a big, scary number, but not when you weigh them against the fear of harming a person with a compromised immunity or having your child contract one of these diseases, it doesn’t compare. Also, living in a society where most people are immunized, your child benefits from others having gotten vaccinated. Please don’t refuse to immunize your child unless you would be willing to let your child live in developing country like Chad, where only 30% of the children are immunized and vaccine-preventable diseases are taking many lives and causing immense pain and suffering.

Where is the data for this article? This is a fear mongering article that gives no real information about how dangerous and simply ineffective vaccines can be. If a vaccine offered immunity to a disease, why would we need a booster? Vaccines do not offer real immunity to diseases and only work to further impair our immune systems. I think that people should be able to make informed decisions about whether or not to vaccinate themselves and their children rather than being forced into it by threats and fear. Learn about vaccines before you blindly accept what the mainstream tells you. http://www.naturalnews.com/028422_vaccines_quackery.html

Vaccines are ineffective? Like for smallpox? And polio? (Do you have any relatives who had polio? I do... they suffered terribly, and they are learning that symptoms can return decades later). Chicken pox can result in encephalitis. Yes, "German measles" is fairly mild; often so mild that a person doesn't even know they have it, and goes out in public, thus exposing pregnant women. Do you know anyone who contracted German measles during pregnancy? I do.... her son was born totally deaf. I don't know about you, but I would be devastated if I knew I had caused something like that. The article says mumps is a mild disease.... not according to the people I know that had it. The FACT is that all of these diseases can have secondary effects that are usually even more devastating than the disease itself. I truly do not understand how any caring parent can in good conscience put their children at this kind of risk.

For the Tdap vaccine given to children entering 7th through 12th grade, I doubt autism is parents' biggest vaccine injury concern. Educated parents will first read the package inserts, which I'll link to here.

They might also choose to read some VAERS reports for the Tdap vaccine. VAERS stands for Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System and the database can be searched here http://www.medalerts.org
Parents also should know that they can sign the Personal Beliefs Exemption Form (CDPH 8261) if they decide they don't want their children to get the shot. The form should be available at every school. If it is not, or if the parent does not agree with the wording on that form, they can write a short letter to the school saying the vaccine is against their beliefs. This is according to California law (CA Health & Safety Code section 120365).

Also, the Tdap vaccine is ineffective against transmission of the pertussis bacteria to others. In the 5th page of this Tdap vaccine advertisement, the manufacturer, Sanofi Pasteur, admits, " It is unknown whether immunizing adolescents and adults against pertussis will reduce the risk of transmission
to infants." http://www.vaccineplace.com/support/brochure/adacelpatientbrochure.pdf

I have to wonder if Anne Gunvalsen Saks has ever spent time with a severely disabled autistic child. Imagine a 16 year old boy who's still in diapers, can't speak, and is in need of constant care and supervision. Imagine that this child has regular seizures and suffers from bowel disease and food allergies. This child has to wear a helmet because he'll bang his head on objects. Now imagine that up until age two, this little boy was healthy and normally developing. Suddenly after routine immunizations, he got sick, lost learned skills and regressed into autism. His doctors were at a loss to explain what happened to him. The only thing they were sure of is that his sickness had nothing to do with the ever-increasing vaccination schedule and they pointed to over a dozen pharma-funded studies to prove it.
This is story of what's happened to countless children across this country. Now imagine someone telling these parents that having autism doesn't compare with catching a communicable disease.

Just for the record, I have spent time with severely disabled Autistic children. Autism is horrible and I believe we need much more research to determine the causes. Please do not confuse my stance on vaccines as apathy for children with Autism and families that struggle to care for them. Also, I in no way compared the effects of Autism with the effects of communicable diseases. I compared your chances of being inflicted with both.

People always refer to a virus like polio to point out the dangers of not vaccinating.
I know a lot about polio because I had polio in the 50's and studied about it years after.Polio was on its way out long before the vaccine and charts will show it. The only people getting polio for years after were those that had been vaccinated(particularly) with the oral one, which is no longer in use in this country for that reason. Polio, neveer in its worse day, affected the numberrs of people that are now affected by autism. The polio vaccine itself caused many diseases that people are suffering from still today. Cancer is aq big one due to SV-40-the simian virus(monkey virus in the polio vaccine as they used crushed monkey kidneys to make the vaccine). To the person that talked about polio and other bad diseases--read, read and read some more. You know so little about vaccines--"The Virus and the Vaccine" is a good place to start with an understanding of polio. Obviously the author doesn't realize that we did vaccinate our children just like you--only ours got sick from them. You talk about harming others---I ask who is going to take care of our sick children? Maurine Meleck SC

I have a 21 year old son with disabling autism, and if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't immunize him at all. I saw regression with each vaccine -- seizures with the DPT, loss of language and social skills and eye contact with the first MMR, autistic self-stimulatory behaviors with the second MMR, self-injurious and aggressive behavior with subsequent vaccinations. I could understand the "coincidence " argument that my pediatrician gave me once, but my son had an adverse reaction to every vaccination. That's more than coincidence.
Vaccines are never tested for safety in combination -- if you get several shots at once you should know that although individual vaccines might be tested, the combination is not. We have no data to determine whether combinations, like getting several shots at once is safe.

ZOMG!!! I absolutely can't believe how crazy some of you can be! I just can't take it anymore. I am losing my temper - on the internet - because I can't believe that anyone in modern America seriously believes that vaccines cause Autism. Or that they somehow have the education or even intelligence to make good decisions regarding their children's health, while simultaneously spouting off anti-vaccine propaganda. Vaccines. Don't. Cause. Autism. Period. Dozens of peer-reviewed studies have found no link whatsoever between vaccines and Autism. The original doctor who claimed there was a link had his license revoked! He is facing jail time because he falsified research studies! "Do your own research"? Where? On the internet? That isn't research! Hitting the google button on the internet machine does not qualify you to even have an informed opinion of medicine. The comment preceding this one is a perfect example: no data to determine whether combinations of vaccines are safe? Where did you get that one? There are reams of data. Hundreds of studies using every possible combination that they can think of. By definition, that is what Stage 4 clinical trials are. You, my dear doctor, are mistakenly thinking of stage 3 trials which test for safetyt. You want proof - the incidence rate of complications from vaccines is LITERALLY 1 in a million! That's lower than TYLENOL! If you choose to not vaccinate, you should be charged with child endangerment, period.

Well, for those of you who do not believe vaccines can cause autism, I suggest you review peer reviewed medical journals in a medical library, as my attorney husband and I did (legal researcher), starting back in 1993, after our now 18 year old son's documented injuries to his whole cell pertussis DPT vaccine. He suffered immediately upon receiving his vaccine with complete somnolence (excessive sleepiness) and awakened 12 hours later with a three hour episode of high-pitched screaming. He then suffered with petit mal seizures, ALL of which were documented events posts-vaccination, written up in the Journal of Pediatrics and the Lancet as far back as the 1940's.

You may also want to review an article, written by Dr. Russell Blaylock, a board certified Neurosurgeon, about over-vaccinating our U.S. infants. Of all the developed countries, the United States has the most intensive of immunization policies, yet our children are the sickest. 1 in every 6 children suffers with learning disabilities, and there are more prevalent chronic autoimmune system disorders seen in our children, then ever before. Interestingly, the autism rates in our country SOARED shortly after the addition of many more vaccines to the infant immunization schedule.

Research has definitely shown that on a 'molecular level,' vaccines are wreaking havoc with our immune systems; this science is NOT taught to our medical and nursing students. I know - I've interviewed many pediatricians, physicians and nursing students, most especially when I attended the most recent National Vaccine Information Center Conference, back in October/2009. To the last person interviewed, ALL of these folks stated they were ONLY taught about the benefits of vaccination; they were NOT taught about vaccine incipients, adjuvants, RNA/DNA foreign particles, etc., of which are directly injected into our infants' bloodstreams.

Here is the link to Neurosurgeon Dr. Russell Blaylock's article on vaccination:
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/pages/the-danger-of-excessive-vaccination-during-brain-development.aspx
And a few snips:
"In the early 1980s, the incidence of autism was 1 in 10,000 births. By 2005, the incidence had leaped to 1 in 250 births and today it is 1 in 150 births and still climbing. One of the strongest links to this terrible set of disorders was a drastic change in the vaccine programs of the United States and many other countries, which included a dramatic increase in the number of vaccines being given at a very early age. No other explanation has been forthcoming from the medical elite."
Kim Kovalchik-Ii

Snip:
"Keep in mind that the child by age one will already have had 24 vaccine inoculations, each spaced no more than one or two months apart. This means the brain microglia are maintained in a constant primed state. Each vaccine increases dramatically the damage done by the previous vaccine series. One is not surprised that so many vaccinated children develop seizures, often repetitive seizures, or that we have such a high incidence of autism. And I can assure the elite of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the CDC that over one million autistic children far exceeds the danger measles, mumps, diphtheria, chickenpox, tetanus, rotavirus, HiB meningitis and hepatitis pose to our youth."
"The proponents of vaccination safety can just say they are safe, without any supporting evidence what-so-ever, and it is to be accepted without question. They can announce that mercury is not only safe, but that it seems to actually increase the IQ, and we are to accept it. They can proclaim thimerosal safe to use in vaccines without their having ever been a single study on its safety in over 60 years of use, and we are to accept it.
Yet, let me, or anyone else, suggest that excessive vaccination can increase the risk of not only autism, but also schizophrenia and neurodegenerative diseases, and they will scream like banshees –Where is the evidence? Where is the evidence? "
